A Fractional-Order Control Approach to Ramp Tracking with Memory-Efficient Implementation
2020
We investigate the fractional-order (FO) control of arbitrary order LTI systems. We show that, for ramp tracking or input disturbance rejection, it is advantageous to include an FO integrator to the open-loop if we have to increase the order of integration further than one. With the lower phase-loss of the FO integrator it is easier to guarantee a desired phase margin. Furthermore the flat phase response around the crossover-frequency (iso-damping property) can be achieved for a wider frequency range such that the closed-loop is more robust wrt. amplitude and phase margins. The drawback of the FO approach is the increased implementation effort and the algebraic decay, which slows down the t…

Model Based Targeting of IL-6-Induced Inflammatory Responses in Cultured Primary Hepatocytes to Improve Application of the JAK Inhibitor Ruxolitinib
2017
IL-6 is a central mediator of the immediate induction of hepatic acute phase proteins (APP) in the liver during infection and after injury, but increased IL-6 activity has been associated with multiple pathological conditions. In hepatocytes, IL-6 activates JAK1-STAT3 signaling that induces the negative feedback regulator SOCS3 and expression of APPs. While different inhibitors of IL-6-induced JAK1-STAT3-signaling have been developed, understanding their precise impact on signaling dynamics requires a systems biology approach. Here we present a mathematical model of IL-6-induced JAK1-STAT3 signaling that quantitatively links physiological IL-6 concentrations to the dynamics of IL-6-induced …
Experimental realization of a pillared metasurface for flexural wave focusing
2021
International audience; A metasurface is an array of subwavelength units with modulated wave responses that show great potential for the control of refractive/reflective properties in compact functional devices. In this work, we propose an elastic metasurface consisting of a line of pillars with gradient heights, erected on a homogeneous plate. The change in the resonant frequencies associated with the height gradient allows us to achieve transmitted phase response covering a range of 2π, while the amplitude response remains at a relatively high level. We employ the pillared units to design a focusing metasurface and compare the properties of the focal spots through simulation and experimen…
Treating cachexia using soluble ACVR2B improves survival, alters mTOR localization, and attenuates liver and spleen responses.
2018
Background Cancer cachexia increases morbidity and mortality, and blocking of activin receptor ligands has improved survival in experimental cancer. However, the underlying mechanisms have not yet been fully uncovered. Methods The effects of blocking activin receptor type 2 (ACVR2) ligands on both muscle and non‐muscle tissues were investigated in a preclinical model of cancer cachexia using a recombinant soluble ACVR2B (sACVR2B‐Fc). Treatment with sACVR2B‐Fc was applied either only before the tumour formation or with continued treatment both before and after tumour formation. The potential roles of muscle and non‐muscle tissues in cancer cachexia were investigated in order to understand th…
Record Phase Sensitive Extinction Ratio in a Silicon Germanium Waveguide
2015
A binary step-like phase response and phase-sensitive extinction ratio in excess of 28dB under CW pump operation was demonstrated in a 20mm-long low birefringence SiGe waveguide, using a polarization-assisted phase sensitive amplifier scheme.
The Effects of Statin Treatment on Serum Ferritin Levels: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.
2022
Background: Statins are the most widely used drugs for decreasing elevated serum LDL-cholesterol (LDL-C) and thus for the prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), but they have also some pleiotropic effects, including anti-inflammatory properties. Atherosclerosis is a low-grade inflammatory disease, and elevated ferritin is considered to be one of the markers of inflammation. Since the results of studies on the effects of statins on serum ferritin levels are conflicting, this meta-analysis was performed. Methods: A literature search was performed using major electronic databases (MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and ISI Web of Science) from inception up to 5 March 2022 t…
A new hepatocyte stimulating factor: cardiotrophin-1 (CT-1)
1995
Abstract Recently, a novel cytokine, cardiotrophin-1 (CT-1), was cloned and found to induce cardiac myocyte hypertrophy in vitro. Amino acid sequence similarity showed CT-1 to be a member of the IL-6/LIF/CNTF/OSM/IL-11 cytokine family. Since all known members of the IL-6 cytokine family induce an hepatic acute phase protein (APP) gene expression, we investigated the ability of CT-1 to induce a liver acute phase response. Upon stimulation of rat hepatoma cells, CT-1 and LIF induced the strongest rat fibrinogen mRNA expression, OSM and IL-6 induced a less pronounced response. When human hepatoma cells and primary rat hepatocytes were stimulated with CT-1, the expression of human haptoglobin a…
